To the parking officer who handed me a ticket tonight at 8th and Lombard: it's not an unattended vehicle if I am physically there to be handed a ticket!  Asshole.

This has been a public service announcement from the Department of No Good Deed Goes Unpunished.

Hi there! Did you miss me? Well, I haven't yet had time to type up a full report of the end of the vacation, mostly due to New Year's and work. I'll get to it eventually, as there's a lot to wrap up, PLUS photos. But I haven't done it yet. So instead, let me distract you with penguins!

South Freaking Africa: The Sun Really Is Brighter Down Here
Hello again, readership (all 4 of you)! Time for yet another update on my adventures south of the equator in the land of the majestic elephant (or, if the elephant isn't majestic enough for you, try the zebra or the giraffe... they're delicious!).

The water really does spin down the drain in the opposite direction here. )

What we have learned over the past few days:
  1. A good bartender serves you drinks; a great bartender drinks with you
  2. Everyone's a little bit racist, and my parents are no exception
  3. The hot, African sun laughs at your puny coat of SPF 30
  4. Aleve is a magical pill that takes all your pain away
  5. Table Mountain is more like an ottoman, really
  6. They call it "Clifton" because it's on a freaking cliff, duh

Continuing Adventures in South Africa
Hello again! Time for more updates! The past two day's adventures take us to wine country and to the posh, idyllic beach resort neighborhood of Camps Bay. Read on!

So, to recap, here is what we've learned this time around:

  1. Wine tastings and giant meals make one VERY SLEEPY
  2. Amarula is possibly my newest addiction
  3. Afrikaans jokes are funny, even if I don't understand them
  4. It's good to have a favorite bar, everywhere in the world you go

South Freaking Africa
I'm sitting here in an internet café/bar in Cape Town trying desperately to capture the pandemonium of the past few days in a form that you, the lovely and dear reader, can understand. It's been fun, but it's also been a hectic ball of stress and, well, that's to be expected of Cohen family vacation. Let's start at the beginning, shall we?

Click here to read more about South Freaking Africa )

So, in summary:
  1. I almost didn't make it to Cape Town
  2. I ate jumbo shrimp, no oxymorons intended
  3. I was manhandled by an eccentric Australian
  4. I was almost a tragic example of the importance of keeping one's attention on the road

If you have any questions, you really should have read behind the LJ-Cut, shouldn't you?

P.S. Oh, and don't you worry... I am taking lots of pictures of the trip, but I won't post any until I get back to DC and have my grand New Year's Eve celebrations in Chinatown. It'll be glorious.

I just had an authentic goddamn Philly mushroom cheesesteak, and I am so happy right now.

I Went To High School With This Guy
An interesting idea to be sure.  But what's more interesting is that I went to high school with this guy.  He played host at our after-prom party.  He used to regularly school us in StarCraft way back when (and poker, too, but he cleaned up too often for me to regularly play with him), and now he's making a living off the combination of those two pursuits.  Kudos, Jordan!

Very Out Of The Norm
If one post is abnormal for me, then two posts in two days is almost unheard of! However, tonight also probably merits some mention. Danielle, my friend and coworker with whom I am staying for 3 nights in LA, took me and some of our West Coast branch out to the Farmer's Market in Fairfax (still in Los Angeles, so don't get excited, you DC people) for dinner. At the Farmer's Market, sitting 3 tables away from us completely randomly, was Ze Frank (Ze, for those of you unfamiliar, is a humorist/celebrity/internet phenomenon who, for the period of a year, ran a video blog called The Show, which was hilarious, poignant, and heartwarming all at the same time). After we were done eating and preparing to leave, I went over to interrupt him and his guests to thank him for being an awesome person. We had a brief and fun conversation, and I SHOOK THE MAN'S HAND. I am, at times, permitted to be a bit of a drooling fanboy.

So, yes, I am having a very good time.

Out Of The Norm
I don't really use this space so much for posting updates so much as I use it for commenting on others' postings, but this probably merits some mention: I was in Chicago, now I am in California.  Brian and Rachel's wedding was amazing - and now they are both in Disneyworld, where, Brian assures me, the cheesesteaks are top notch.  I, on the other hand, am winding down my first day west of the Mississippi river, having already driven down Sunset and Hollywood Boulevards, and by the lovely Pacific Ocean.  Thanks to all of you reading this who were at the wedding yesterday who helped make it so special (especially the bride and groom) and I will see you DC folks in a week's time.
